19 сентября 1886 с[ело] Майданово Милый друг Василий Васильевич! Все лето я посвятил сочинению оперы «Чародейка», которую вчерне окончил в конце августа, а сегодня начал инструментовку. Кроме того, я написал 12 романсов. Вот и все. Может быть, тебе не безынтересно будет узнать, что Танеев написал новый квартет. Про Аренского, который находится в Вене, знаю, что он написал увертюру, или симфоническую фантазию, на программу романа Дюма «La dame aux Camelias». Впрочем, я не знаю, намерен ли он публиковать программу или он сообщил Танееву конфиденциально сюжет своего сочинения, а потому прошу тебя в газете про «Dame aux Camelias» не печатать. Оно немножко странно и многих удивит или даже насмешит. Кланяйся Ивану Васильевичу и верь в искреннее дружеское расположение моё. П. Чайковский В близком будущем я собираюсь побывать в Петербурге и навещу тебя.

19 September 1886 Maydanovo village Dear friend Vasily Vasilyevich! I have devoted the whole summer to composing the opera "The Enchantress", which was finished in draft at the end of August, and I started the instrumentation today. Besides this, I have written 12 romances. That is all. Perhaps you will not be uninterested to learn that Taneyev has written a new quartet. As for Arensky, who is to be found in Vienna, I know that he has written an overture, or symphonic fantasia, on the subject of Dumas' novel "La dame aux Camelias". However, I do not know whether he intends to publish the programme or whether he told Taneyev the subject of his composition in confidence, and therefore I ask you not to print anything about "Dame aux Camelias" in the newspaper. It is rather strange and many will be surprised or even amused. My regards to Ivan Vasilyevich and be assured of my sincere and friendly relations. P.
