Многоуважаемый
Николай Константинович Я очень виноват перед Вами. Сколько лет лежит у меня Ваше переложение «Франчески» и я до сих пор ничего не сделал. Дело в том, что хотя Ваше переложение сделано с несомненной талантливостью, но оно требует обстоятельной переделки множества подробностей, и вот я никак не могу собраться с силами и посвятить этому труду несколько дней. Что теперь делать? Хотите ли попытаться оставить у меня Вашу рукопись, с тем что я обещаюсь постараться в течение этой зимы исполнить взятую на себя задачу? Или же хотите, чтобы я Вам немедленно выслал рукопись? Решайте как хотите, — но только во всяком случае убедительно прошу Вас извинить мне мою непростительную вину перед Вами. Тысяча причин заставила меня быть в отношении Вас неделикатным, лживым, бессовестным, и могу уверить Вас, что тяжесть моих вин до крайности тяготит меня. Ещё раз простите. Nikolay Konstantinovich I am most ashamed before you. How many years have I had your arrangement of Francesca, and thus far I have done nothing. The fact is that although your arrangement is done with undeniable talent, it requires thorough alterations to numerous details, and I am cannot summon the strength here to devote several days to this task. What to do now? Do you want to risk leaving your manuscript with me, with a promise that I will try to rally myself to undertake this task during the course of the winter? Or do you wish me to return the manuscript to you forthwith? Decide as you wish — only in any case I earnestly beg your forgiveness for my inexcusable shame before you. A thousand reasons caused me be indelicate, dishonest and unconscionable towards you, and I can assure you that the burden of my guilt weighs upon me to the utmost degree. Once more, forgive me.
