Most respected
Yevgeny Karlovich!

I have just written my gratitude officially, but permit me now to thank you yet again privately. The fact is that I am very touched and flattered by your attention.

The news that the Philharmonic Society wants to give a whole concert of my works gladdens me, naturally, but I cannot hide from you that at the same time it frightens me. After all, the Philharmonic Society is not merely musical, but also charitable. It is not at all out of false modesty that I tell you that, although the intended concert will afford me a great honour, this will not bring in money for the widows and orphans' fund. The majority of the public do not go to a concert for the performed, but for the performers. In the present instance, owing to the exclusivity of the programme, it is though the performers are a secondary consideration, and the Philharmonic Society is placing its hopes on the interest generated by my music. Naturally there is interest to some extent, but this will be insufficient to fill the hall — and this is very important, since it is money that the widows and orphans require, and not the propagation of my works to the public. In short, the hall will probably be half empty, and it will be extremely unpleasant for me to think that this is because of me. The interest in this concert could be significantly increased if I were to conduct it myself, for this would be a novel curiosity. But, to my utmost regret, I am entirely unfit for conducting, and I decidedly cannot promise in this sense to contribute to the success of the concert. There is one more circumstances which I ought to mention. The rehearsals of my opera "Cherevichki" shall be taking place in Moscow in the middle of November. Naturally, I certainly want and desire to attend the concert — but how could I do so if the opera will be on at the same time?

Anyway, we will discuss all this (including the programme, by the way) in person when we meet soon. I shall be in Petersburg for the 1st production of "Harold" and will certainly visit you and arrange a meeting with you one way or another.

In the meantime, thank you once more, most kind Yevgeny Karlovich!

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky
