Dear friend!

Circumstances have developed such that I'll be staying here for at least a week. Nápravník would be so offended if I don't go to "Harold" that even if the opera didn't interest me, I would still have to come for his sake, and besides, it is very much of interest to me. It's not worth going home just to come back again right way. I've just received your letter regarding Palermo. I'm very happy and most grateful to you.

I don't know whether you're coming to "Harold"? If you come, then bring me a print of the romances, and if you don't come then send it to me. I've promised Kamenskaya, who's giving a concert on the 16th and would very much like to sing something new from my works. Don't forget to do this. I received a letter from Mackar: he urges me to remind you to send him the original manuscript of the "Dumka" as promised; he also writes that you sent, at his request, either to him or directly to Mr 'Emile Sauret the waltz from Yevgeny Onegin with errors in the parts such that it couldn't be played without the score. The local conductor Engel complained to me that the waltz from "Yevgeny Onegin" that he ordered from you isn't my original, but rather some concoction in the form of a waltz done by Büchner. It seems to me that your doing this is futile. My waltz with the entr'acte can be given at any concert, even a serious one. Büchner's concoction may only be suitable for a small ballroom orchestra. And even then wouldn't it simply be better to re-score my waltz from a large to a small orchestra, rather than inserting motifs from elsewhere in the opera? I think you ought to engrave the entr'acte and waltz separately and sell them to whoever wants them. It has the potential to be popular.

And with that, keep well, until we meet.
