Ваше императорское высочество!
Я оттого до сих пор не благодарил Вас за милостивое внимание к просьбе моей (касательно бенефиса оркестра Московской оперы) что все ожидал какого-нибудь ответа от г. министра двора на моё ходатайство. Но ответа никакого не воспоследовало, а между тем меня беспокоит мысль, что я не выразил до сих пор моей горячей благодарности Вашему высочеству за поддержку, оказанную моей, как кажется, неуместной просьбе. И поэтому спешу от всей души поблагодарить Ваше высочество и извиниться перед Вами за то, что злоупотребляю благосклонною снисходительностью Вашею. Мне как-то совестно, что я утруждал Вас и через Ваше посредство самого государя такими пустяками. Если я виноват, то прошу извинить меня. Пользуюсь случаем, чтобы известить Ваше высочество, что опера моя «Черевички» благополучно была представлена уже три раза. Все три раза я сам дирижировал оперой. Исполнением и постановкой я очень, очень доволен. Теперь с величайшею поспешностью буду доканчивать оперу мою «Чародейку», дабы к Посту она была бы уже представлена в Дирекцию и можно было начать спевки. В течение весны буду инструментовать те действия оперы, которые покамест изготовляю лишь в форме клавираусцуга. А затем примусь с величайшим усердием и удовольствием за положение на музыку нескольких Ваших стихотворений. В начале поста буду иметь честь Посетить Ваше высочество, а покамест прошу Вас принять уверение в чувствах глубочайшего уважения и преданности, с коими имею честь быть Вашего высочества покорнейший слуга, П. Your Imperial Highness!
The reason that I had not hitherto thanked you for your gracious attention to my request (regarding the Moscow opera's benefit performance) is that I was still awaiting some sort of response to my petition from the Minister of the Court. But no response whatsoever has ensued, and meanwhile I am troubled by the thought that I have still to express my fervent gratitude to Your Highness for the support given to my seemingly inappropriate request. And I therefore hasten to thank Your Highness with all my heart, and to apologise to you for abusing your favourable indulgence. I feel somewhat embarrassed to have troubled you, and through you, the Sovereign himself, with such trifling matters. If I am guilty, then please forgive me. May I take this opportunity to inform Your Highness that my opera "Cherevichki" has already been successfully staged on three occasions. On all three occasions, I conducted the opera myself. I am very, very pleased with the performance and production. I shall now finish my opera "The Enchantress" with the utmost haste, so that by Lent it should already have been submitted to the Directorate, and the singing can begin. Over the course of the spring, I shall be scoring those acts of the opera which for the time being I have ready only in the form of a piano reduction. And then I shall set about with the greatest enthusiasm and pleasure the setting of several of your poems to music. I shall have the honour of visiting Your Highness at the start of Lent, but in the meantime I ask you to accept the assurance of my feelings of the deepest respect and devotion, whereupon I have the honour to be Your Highness's most humble servant, P.
