21 March Moscow Most respected Semyon Nikolayevich!
I thank you with all my heart for sending the pass [1] and hasten to apologise for troubling you unnecessarily with my request. It turns out that I am unable to be at the theatre today, but then I will be there throughout tomorrow, along with P. I. Blaramberg, who has promised to accommodate me for this evening at least. I am very, very grateful to you, and once again beg you to excuse my bothering you unnecessarily. I am returning the pass herewith. With sincere devotion and respect for you, P. Tchaikovsky |
Notes and References
- ↑ Evidently Tchaikovsky had requested a pass for admission to the Maly Theatre in Moscow, where the Musical-Dramatic School of the Moscow Philharmonic Society were rehearsing the new opera Skomorokh (Скоморох) by the Russian composer Pavel Ivanovich Blaramberg (1841-1907). Tchaikovsky did attend the premiere the following evening, at which only the first act was performed.
