Боржом 26 июня 1887 Аня, голубушка! Виноват, виноват, виноват! Конечно, я должен был писать тебе первый, но и на этот раз ты выказала себя бесконечно более внимательной, милой и доброй, чем я. Впрочем, должен тебе сказать, что, кроме Кондратьевых, я все это время ни с кем не вёл переписки. Ведь переписка меня утомляет гораздо более, чем моё дело, и раз что я собрался отдохнуть, мне нужно было перестать не только работать, но и письма писать. Теперь я достаточно отдохнул и спешу тебе доложить вкратце о всем мною испытанном. Путешествие по Волге (которая сама по себе, независимо от берегов, мне симпатична) могло бы быть для меня очень приятно, если бы я ехал на своём пароходе. Но ехать на переполненном пассажирами судне, среди не вообразимой тесноты, суеты и под постоянной угрозой навязывающихся на знакомство с Путников — для меня совсем не особенно приятно. Что касается знаменитого правого берега, то он местами очень живописен, но однообразен до последней степени. Из городов, в коих мы останавливались, мне очень симпатичен маленький городок Вольск, в коем существует такой великолепный, старинный сад, каких в России очень немного. В Каспийском море меня в первую ночь качало ужасно, и я жестоко трусил, хотя не испытывал морской болезни. В Тифлисе провёл около двух недель. Было мучительно жарко, что не мешало нам ежедневно бывать в театре на представлениях Савиной, произведшей фурор и удостоившейся от тифлисцев таких оваций, каких я ещё никогда в жизни не видал. В Боржоме я нахожусь уже 2 недели. У нас чудесная дача, с прекрасным тенистым садом и с тропинкой, ведущей в Воронцовский парк, — а парк этот необычайно хорош. Вообще Боржом чрезвычайно живописен и богат разнообразием прогулок. Известно ли тебе, что здесь есть отличные минеральные воды? Я об этом не знал, но теперь не только знаю — по опыту оцениваю их достоинства, ибо пью их, и они очень хорошо на меня действуют. Доктор нашёл у меня довольно серьёзный катар желудка и находящуюся в связи с ним неправильность в месте, занимаемом печенью. Эта негодница попала куда-то не совсем на своё место. Для лечения этого недуга (впрочем, по словам доктора очень неважного) предписаны ванны из тёплой минеральной воды и массаж. Курс будет продолжаться шесть недель. Жизнь наша очень правильная и приятная. Модест приехал наконец три дня тому назад. Толя вчера явился из Тифлиса на 10 дней. Паня очень похорошела и все такая же милая. Татуся просто очаровательна и забавна до последней степени. Все они тебе усердно кланяются. Я очень рад, что Вы переезжаете в Царское село. Я от этого, конечно, ничего не потеряю, ибо не сомневаюсь, что будем видеться даже чаще и больше, а вам это гораздо покойнее. Вот что Аня? Не возьмёшь ли ты у меня хоть раз в жизни немного денег, в случае если при переезде они будут нужны? Пожалуйста, не преувеличивай свою деликатность; ей Богу, просто смешно, что ты со мной церемонишься. На всякий случай присылаю тебе записочку, по которой ты можешь получить у О. И. Юргенсона (Большая Морская, на углу Невского) сто р[ублей]. Если нужно ещё, ради Бога, не церемонься, — сосчитаемся когда-нибудь. Засим пока целую и обнимаю тебя от всего сердца. Тысяча поклонов Петру Ивановичу и Любовь Петровне. Твой П. Ч. Кондратьев в Ахене!!! Не чудо ли это? Бедный Н. Ф. Литке и бедная [Маля]. Тебе не нужно самой идти за деньгами. Пошли девушку. О Mourrier Толя говорит, что, по слухам, это легко мысленный француз, бывший чем-то при великих князьях и писавший статью о Кавказе. Лично же ни Толя, ни Паня его не знают и никогда не видели. Толя говорит, что, кажется, он имеет действительно репутацию хвастуна и благёра, но, впрочем, утверждать не может. Я ровно ничего не делаю, предаюсь безусловному отдыху. В конце августа или начале сентября увидимся.

Borzhom 26 June 1887 Anya, golubushka! Guilty, guilty, guilty! Of course, I should have written to you first, but on this occasion you showed yourself to be infinitely more attentive, sweet and kind than me. However, I should tell that, apart from the Kondratyevs, I haven't been in correspondence with anyone this whole time. After all, correspondence wearies me far more than my work, and since I was intending to rest, I needed not only to stop working, but writing letters too. Now I've had sufficient rest, and I'm hastening to report to you briefly about all my experiences. Travelling along the Volga (which in itself, regardless of its banks, is agreeable to me), could be very pleasant for me, if I were travelling on my own ship. But travelling on a ship overcrowded with passengers, amidst unimaginably cramped conditions, commotion and under the constant threat of those trying to make Putnikov's acquaintance, is altogether not particularly pleasant for me. As for the famous right bank, it is very picturesque in places, but monotonous in the extreme. Of the towns in which we stopped, the most agreeable to me was the small town of Volsk, which contains such a magnificent, ancient garden, of which there are very few in Russia. On the first night in the Caspian Sea we were rocking terribly, and I was dreadfully frightened, although I didn't experience sea-sickness. I spent around two weeks in Tiflis. It was excruciatingly hot, which did not prevent us from going to the theatre every day to see Savina's performances, which caused a furore and received such applause from the Tiflisians as I had never seen in my life. I've been in Borzhom for 2 weeks now. We have a wonderful dacha, with a beautiful shady garden and a path leading to Vorontsov Park — and this park is exceptionally good. In general, Borzhom is remarkably picturesque and rich in a variety of walks. Did you know that there are splendid mineral waters here? I didn't know about this, but not only do I now know, but I can rate their merits from experience, because I'm drinking them, and they have a very good effect on me. The doctor found that I had quite a serious catarrh of the stomach and, in connection with it, an irregularity in the position of the liver. The scoundrel has made it somewhere completely out of place. The prescription to treat this ailment (although, according to the doctor, it is very unimportant), is to take baths in the warm mineral waters, and massage. The course will last six weeks. Our life is very pleasant and correct. Modest finally arrived three days ago. Tolya appeared yesterday from Tiflis for 10 days. Panya has become prettier and is just as sweet as always. Tatyusa is simply charming and funny in the extreme. They all bow to you earnestly. I'm very glad that you are moving to Tsarskoye Selo. Of course, I won't lose anything from this, because I have no doubt that we shall see each other even more and more often, and it will be far more peaceful for you. Now look here Anya! Won't you accept some money from me at least once in your life, in case you need it when moving? Please, do not exaggerate your delicacy; by God, it's just funny that you stand on ceremony with me. Just in case, I'm sending you a note, which you can use to receive a hundred rubles from O. I. Jurgenson (Bolshaya Morkaya, on the corner of Nevsky). If you need more, for God's sake don't stand on ceremony — we'll settle up one day. For now, I hug and kiss you with all my heart. A thousand bows to Pyotr Ivanovich and Lyubov Petrovna. Yours P. T. Kondratyev is in Aachen? Isn't that a miracle? Poor N. F. Litke and poor Malya. You don't have to go for the money yourself. Send the girl. Tolya says about Mourrier, that, rumour has it, he is a frivolous Frenchman who had something to do with the grand dukes, and wrote an article about the Caucasus. Neither Tolya nor Panya know him personally, and have never seen him. Tolya says that it seems he actually has a reputation as a braggart and a bully, but he cannot attest to this, however. I am doing precisely nothing, indulging in unconditional rest. We'll see each other at the end of August or beginning of September.
