23 авг[уста] Ахен Голубчик Толя! Прости, что давно не писал. Было так печально, так мучительно скверно, что перо не хотелось брать в руки. Я все время жил только одною мыслью и одним чувством: дожить до 25-го и уехать от этого бесконечного кошмара. Вчера дело дошло до того, что бедный Н[иколай] Д[митриевич] совсем задыхался, ибо вода подступила к лёгким. Решились на крайнюю меру: воду выпустили. Разумеется, он чувствует себя облегчённым — но дело совсем плохо. Или он не вынесет всех этих передряг и умрёт от слабости или гангрены, или вода несомненно опять начнёт набираться. Я еду 25[-го], послезавтраго прямо в Майданово, где останусь до 7-го сентября, потом в Петербург. Напиши, как ты решишь с вашей поездкой и с назначением времени, когда ставить «Чародейку». 23 August Aachen Golubchik Tolya! Forgive me for not writing for a while. It's been so pitiful, so agonizingly wretched, that I haven't wanted to pick up my pen. I've lived the whole time with just one thought and one feeling: stay until the 25th and then leave this unending nightmare. Yesterday it came to the point that poor Nikolay Dmitryevich was quite suffocated, because water reached his lungs. An extreme measure was decided upon: water release. Naturally, he feels relieved, but the situation is utterly bad. Either he won't endure all this battles and will expire from weakness or gangrene, or the water will undoubtedly begin to collect again. I'm going on the 25th, the day after tomorrow, straight to Maydanovo, where I'm staying until 7th September, then to Petersburg.
