3 сент[ября 18]87 Голубчик Модя! Ты спрашиваешь, как я себя чувствую? Отлично. Я бесконечно наслаждаюсь одиночеством и спокойствием. Об Ахене не думаю, и только во сне, как ужасный кошмар, представляется мне это проклятое место. Симон немного отравляет мне существование, и ещё я немножко страдаю от лютой зависти. Некто Соболевский осуществил мой идеал перед моим носом. Он купил у Новичихи очаровательный клочок земли и леса на берегу реки около мельницы (помнишь?) и выстроил там чудный домик. И все это ему почти ничего не стоило!!! Ужасно, мучительно завидно. Сейчас получил письмо от Павловской. Мне необходимо быть в Петербурге теперь, чтобы разрешить разные недоразумения. Кстати уж и на Консерват[орском] юбилее буду. Но потом уеду опять в Майданово, ибо репетиции начнутся не ранее 20 числа. Итак, до скорого свиданья. Я приеду 7-го числа утром. Целую, обнимаю. Твой, П. 3 September 1887 Golubchik Modya! You ask how I'm feeling in myself? [1] Splendid. My enjoyment of the solitude and tranquillity is boundless. I'm not thinking about Aachen, and it's only during sleep that I'm reminded of this accursed place, as an awful nightmare. Simon [2] is something of a blight on my existence, and I'm still suffering a little from pangs of envy. Some Sobolevsky [3] has achieved my ambition before my very nose. He's bought a charming little plot of land from Novichikha [4], and the woods on the river bank by the mill (you remember?) and has built a marvellous little house there. And all this cost him next to nothing!!! I'm awfully, painfully envious. I've just received a letter from Pavlovskaya [5]. I need to be in Petersburg presently, in order to settle various misunderstandings [6].. And what's more, to be at the Conservatory's jubilee [7].
