Town of Klin, village of Frolovskoye
21 September 1888

They've behaved rather oddly in Prague [2]. I mean, why didn't they ask me in the summer to send them the costumes and abridgements? I've repeatedly been thinking about the one and the other, but I felt it was awkward to raise the matter myself, because I thought that the production of Onegin had perhaps been postponed or cancelled altogether, given that since February I hadn't received any news from Prague [3]. With regard to the costumes, I shall write to Pogozhev immediately and ask him to send the drawings [4]. That is all I can do now. As for the score, I have a big favour to ask of you. For God's sake, golubchik, would you arrange for that abridgement I made in Scene 1 of Act III for the production of the opera in Petersburg to be copied at my expense. That is, I mean the modulation I made in order to skip the long and boring chorus:

and lead straight into Tatyana's entrance. As for the Ecossaise [5], I'm not particularly keen on it, but if you think that it is better for the opera to include it, could you have the Ecossaise copied as well, and then, dear Eduard Frantsevich, kindly entrust Volodya with the task of sending all this off. I shall pay for the copying work as soon as you notify me that it has all been done. Forgive me, do forgive me, for God's sake, for troubling you!!!

I shall write to you in more detail about myself on another occasion—it is very late now, and I am hastening to finish this letter so that it can be taken to Klin tomorrow morning.

I have written a symphony [6] and a Hamlet overture, and apart from that I have orchestrated a very interesting overture by Laroche.

What did you do over the summer? Surely you must have composed something?

I embrace you, my dear friend! My very warm regards to Olga Eduardovna. I am sending Volodya a letter, which I addressed to him in Nauheim and which was returned to me from there [7]. Tell Volodya to write to me.

Until we meet, my dear fellow!

Yours P. Tchaikovsky
