Dear friend! As for "Hamlet"[1] I said to you repeatedly and even warned you that there is still more to write besides it and the symphony![2]. But within barely a year or two I'll have written the music to "Hamlet", and for the time being I've written just the overture, which won't be printed until everything is finished [3].

I'm somewhat sceptical about the mistake the engraver found, and I'm frightened to death that he's found and corrected an imaginary error, so that I'll be tearing out my hair with despair. On Friday I'll be in Moscow. Until we meet.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

  2. Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64.
  3. The overture-fantasia Hamlet would be published by Jurgenson in July 1890, before Tchaikovsky had written his incidental music for the rest of Shakespeare's play in January 1891.
