Your Imperial Highness!

I earnestly request you to forgive my writing on paper that is unbefitting for the occasion — but having just received your letter, I wanted to reply immediately, and did not have any other paper to hand.

I was extremely upset that I did not have the opportunity to visit Your Highness during my brief stay in Petersburg. I spent only three days there; I had intended, as you recall, to have the utmost pleasure (having previously sought your permission) to come to you for lunch on Monday 23rd January, but it so happened that I had a business meeting with the theatre directorate (for whom I am now writing a ballet), and I was deprived of the opportunity of seeing you and the Grand Duchess. It has only been two weeks since I went abroad, and already I have had to conduct twice in Cologne and in Frankfurt, and tomorrow I shall be conducting here. Having just returned from the 2nd rehearsal, I had intended writing to you with some details of the discomfort I experienced, but I will do this somewhat later. Today I merely have the opportunity of notifying Your Highness that I received your letter today, and I shall be writing to Ziloti as well. I fully understand the reasons why you cannot invite him to participate in your concert at this time.

I will soon be writing to Your Highness properly and I ask you to excuse today's hasty letter. I ask you to convey to the Grand Duchesses and expression of my most profound respect.

Your most obedient servant,

P. Tchaikovsky
