My dear friend!

A. O. Patera has told me [1] that you have agreed to conduct a concert next season in Moscow. You cannot imagine how gladdened I was by this news! Thank you, dear friend! You are doing an enormous service to our Moscow musical society, and I hope that Moscow will be able to express its gratitude to you.

Now there are two business questions to be decided concerning 1) the timing of your visit and 2) the remuneration for your efforts.

1) Our concerts take place on the following dates (in new style):

1889   November 2, 9, 23
December 7, 21

1890   January 11, 18
February 1-
March 7, 14, 21, 28
April 4

Be so kind as to say which of these days is the most convenient for you.

Now a few words about fees.

Such a famous and excellent artist as you deserves to be rewarded for his efforts with whole piles of gold. But, unfortunately, our society's means are not great, and at we are not presently in a position to offer you remuneration befitting of your reputation. We have the possibility only to recompense your travel expenses up to the amount of 800 silver rubles (around 1000 guilders).

Kindly take the trouble, dear friend, to answer me these 2 questions as possible. I ask you to address them to Wolff (Berlin W. 19 am Carlsbad). If you reply to me in Czech, then please ask our mutual friend A. O. Patera to supply a translation [2].

I was most upset not to find you in Dresden when I was there! My regards to your dear spouse.

Your sincerely affectionate,

P. Tchaikovsky

  2. Dvořák's reply came via a letter from Patera dated 21 February/5 March 1889 (published in Чайковский и зарубежные музыканты (1970), p. 182-183), in which he accepted the 800 silver rubles in travel expenses and agreed to conduct in Moscow no earlier than March 1890, because he was wary of the Russian winter. His concert would eventually take place just over a year later, on 27 February/11 March 1890, while Tchaikovsky was staying in Florence.
