Deeply respected Yakov Petrovich!

On receiving your letter yesterday, I immediately set off for the offices of "Artist", but finding no-one there I left a note asking the editor-publisher Mr Kumanin to call on me today. He was here just now, and the result of our conversation, to my great chagrin, will not please you. Kumanin explained to me that the Principal Directorate responsible for the press is demanding that "Artist" carries exclusively articles, plays or novels that are directly related to theatre, music, or to the arts in general. Therefore, despite their fervent wish to have you as a contributor, Kumanin says that there is no possibility of him accepting your poem. At the same time he most earnestly requests you to submit something appropriate to the journal's programme, predominantly the form of a drama, for example a monologue for the stage, or, at least, some short poems, but once again appropriate to the contents of the programme.

And so, dear Yakov Petrovich, I was unable to find a place for your sympathetic, highly talented and original poetic offspring. I am deeply sorry for that.

A strange and sad state of affairs! Polonsky writes a poem, and it cannot find a home!!!

I will be in Petersburg on 1st November and staying for the whole month. Our musical greeting will not be performed at a concert, but rather at a ceremonial act in the nobles' assembly hall, to where you will certainly receive an invitation. But of course, I will try to arrange for you to attend the concert as well!

I am very saddened that the "Artist" business has not died down, but certainly be in no doubt, Yakov Petrovich, that this was not through want of desire to render a service to you.

Until we meet!

Your sincerely devoted and deeply respectful,

P. Tchaikovsky
