19 февр[аля]/3 марта [18]90 Дорогая Марья Николаевна! Очень Вам благодарен за письмо Ваше и за интересные новости, сообщаемые Вами. Насчёт Colonn'а скажу Вам, что надо войти и в его положение. Как композиторы, так и всякие вокальные и инструментальные исполнители очень утомляют его своими предложениями. И так как большинство тех и других слабо и плохо, то естественно с его стороны некоторое недоверие к посетителям и не которая неподатливость. С другой стороны. если ему исполнитель и нравится (как, я надеюсь, было на сей раз), то в качестве человека, ищущего успеха и гоняющегося за сборами, он не всегда найдёт подходящий случай, чтобы этим исполнителем или автором заинтересовать публику. Но случай этот придёт, и тогда он сделает и устроит все отлично. По крайней мере, мои оба концерта 2 года тому назад были устроены так, что я Colonn'у обязан вечной благодарностью. Насчёт культа Вагнера скажу, что я не совсем верю в искренность увлечения парижской публики вагнеровской музыкой, но что на Вагнера спрос огромный, что он интересует и привлекает парижскую концертную публику — это факт вне сомнения. И очень понятно, что и Lamoureux, и Colonne стараются этому спросу принести широкое удовлетворение. 19 February/3 March 1890 Dear Marya Nikolayevna! I am very grateful to you for your letter and for the interesting news you reported. Regarding Colonne I say to you that you must put yourself in his position. How very weary he must be of offers from composers and all manner of vocal and instrumental performers. And as the majority of these are poor and feeble, then it is only natural on his part for there to be a certain suspicion of visitors, which is not merely narrow-mindedness. On the other hand, if a performer pleases him (as I hope on this occasion), then as a person seeking success and financial reward, he will not always find an appropriate opportunity for this performer or that author to interest the public. But when the time comes, then he will do it and organize everything splendidly. At least, both of my concerts 2 years ago were organized in such a way that I owe Colonne my eternal gratitude. As for the Wagner cult, I will say that I do not quite believe in the sincerity of the Parisian public's passion for Wagner's music, but that there is an enormous clamour for Wagner and that he interests and draws in the Parisian concert audiences — this is a fact beyond doubt. And it is very clear that both Lamoureux and Colonne are attempting to broadly satisfy this demand. Dear Marya Nikolayevna, kindly convey to Madame Artôt my boundless gratitude for her publicly singing my new romances. I can imagine how divinely she sang them! Incidentally, tell me her address, and I'll write to her occasionally. Tell her that I am imagining kissing her hands firmly. And thank you, dear Marya Nikolayevna! Forgive my slapdash writing.
