My dear Kolya!

Forgive me for being so late in writing to thank you for sending the money. I'm altogether a good-for-nothing correspondent now, because I've been working too hard. I wanted, my dear young friend, to remember the old days and to live in Rome. But since it's now unthinkable for me to live in an ordinary separate room, separated by a thin partition from another where two lousy Englishwomen are practising the piano or singing their vulgar hymns — then I wrote to three hotels recommended by Baedeker (the Costanzi doesn't feature), enquiring if they could accommodate me entirely separately, give me a separate table in the table d'hôte etc. I received very nice answers to all the letters, but they were not to my satisfaction. There's an unprecedented gathering of foreigners in Rome: everywhere is busy, and you need to go there and run around for four days to find something. Owing to my reluctance to waste time, and realising that I was unlikely to find accommodation like this, I decided to remain here for now and to finish the piano arrangement of my opera. I'm very pleased with the opera so far, and at times it seems to me that it will please everyone. But authors are never fair judges of the products of their imagination. We'll see!

My antipathy towards Florence is inexplicable! I very much like my rooms here, where I have complete peace and am separated from the neighbours by solid walls, I love the Cascino, especially some completely deserted corners of it, but everything else is incredibly horrible to me. It's true that, due to my work, I don't have time to visit museums, churches, etc. And I'm actually talking about the streets of Florence, which are monotonous, tedious and uninteresting. I made a big mistake in not going to Rome; at that time I could have settled there splendidly, and I would surely have been less fed up.

If, God willing, I make it to Frolovskoye in the middle of April, then I'll finish the instrumentation of the opera by mid July. Then I dream of coming to stay with you at Grankino, Kamenka and the Caucuses. I'll probably travel straight from Florence to Russia via Petersburg, so I'll see you soon. God grant you success with your examinations. I kiss you hard, Kolechka! Regards and kisses to Modest and Nara.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky

The Jurgenson in Moscow will send the money to Jurgenson in Petersburg. Modest will receive it and give it to you. Give my regards to your Mama and Vladimir Aleksandrovich when you see them. Nazar asks to pass on his respects.
