1-го мая 1890 г[ода] С[анкт] Петербург Глубокоуважаемый Иван Александрович!
При сем посылаю на утверждение Ваше распределение ролей в «Пиковой даме». Мне говорили, что Вы не одобряете выбор Мельникова для роли Томского, но уверяю Вас, дорогой Иван Александрович, что я положительно никого иного не могу и вообразить себе в ней, и мне кажется, что услыхавши в ней Мельникова, Вы останетесь им довольны. Впрочем, на случай, что я ошибся, есть заместитель — Чернов. Сегодня я отправляюсь в деревню доканчивать партитуру. Надеюсь, что через месяц все будет готово. Роли будут по напечатании посланы из Москвы режиссёру А. Я. Морозову, который разошлёт их артистам. Для роли Лизы я считаю наиболее подходящей Мравину, — но в иных местах мне кажется, что Медея будет, пожалуй, лучше её. Я написал оба эти имени, но недурно, если на всякий случай и Сионицкая будет знать эту партию. Жаль, что нет дублёра для партии Князя — жениха (Яковлева)! Желаю Вам как можно приятнее провести лето. Если среди лета Вам нужно будет по поводу «Пиковой дамы» поговорить со мной, — то я постоянно к Вашим услугам; стоит только послать мне депешу (г[ород] Клин, Моск[овской] губ[ернии]), и я немедленно приеду. 1st May 1890 Saint Petersburg Deeply respected Ivan Aleksandrovich!
I am sending herewith for your confirmation the assignment of roles in "The Queen of Spades" [1]. I have been told that you do not approve of the choice of Melnikov for the role of Tomsky, but I assure you, dear Ivan Aleksandrovich, that I categorically cannot imagine it to be anyone else, and it seems to me that, having heard Melnikov, you will find yourself content with him. Yet, in the event that I am mistaken, there is an alternative — Chernov [2]. I am setting off for the country today in order to complete the full score. I hope that within a month everything will be ready. The roles will be sent in printed form to the Moscow director A. Ya. Morozov, who will distribute them to the artists. I consider Mravina most suited to the role of Liza, but there are passages where it seems to me that Medea [3] will possibly be better than her. I have written both these names, but either would be satisfactory in any case, and Sionitskaya [4] will also be familiar with the part. It is a pity that there is no understudy for the Prince's part — the fiancé ("Yakovlev") [5]! I wish you as pleasant a summer as possible. Should you need to discuss anything with me regarding "The Queen of Spades" during the summer, then I am always at your service; you need only telegraph me (town of Klin, Moscow province), and I shall come immediately.
