Most respected Anna Antonovna!

I have only just arrived to spend the summer in the country, where amongst the letters I found yours with a lovely card enclosed. My heartfelt thanks to you for being so good as to remember me — your attention means a great deal to me. I hope to visit Peterhof during the course of the summer, and to have the opportunity to express my most lively gratitude to you verbally. For God's sake forgive me that at the present moment I cannot send you myself "en deputé". But I will write to Paris so that they will send me this photograph, and then I shall hasten to send it to you.

I ask you to convey my most sincere greetings to your husband, as well as my most profound respects to Vera Aleksandrovna.

I spent several days in Petersburg on the occasion of my niece's wedding. As a consequence of this wedding and the accompanying family gatherings, I did not have the opportunity to visit Anton Grigoryevich, neither during his inspection hours at the conservatory, nor at his house at dinner time. I am afraid that he he noticed my apparent inattentiveness towards him. If you have occasion to learn that this is so, then be so good, most kind Anna Antonovna, to intercede on my behalf and to explain the reasons why I was deprived of the pleasure of seeing him. However, it is very likely that he, being occupied with the examinations, was unaware of my non-appearance.

And so, until we meet, most respected Anna Antonovna.

Your devoted,

P. Tchaikovsky
