Dear friend!

I shall ask Anatoly about Kapnist's name and patronymic (I've forgotten), and will write to him as eloquently as possible about poor Karlusha.

You appear to be mistaken that according to the terms of the Imperial Theatre, I do not have the right to give the opera to Kiev. This restriction applies to private theatres in Petersburg. Anyway, I've written to Pryanishnikov and asked him to enquire. I have no fear of unfavourable reviews from Kiev, because I am certain that this opera will really be liked everywhere (of course, it's quite possible that I'm grossly mistaken). I was at the opera in Kiev six weeks ago, and I will tell you that in terms of production, ensemble, and quality of performers, Kiev is superior to Moscow, thanks to Pryanishnikov's enthusiasm and intelligence. Furthermore, he is madly delighted with "The Queen of Spades", and will stop at nothing to have it all go well.

I didn't answer your question whether Gabel can have a copy of "The Queen of Spades". In my view, artists should not generally be refused. Critics can have them as well, if they are asked not to write anything before the production. Generally, they shouldn't be sold in the store, but you can give them to anyone at your discretion. If, to spare you inconvenience, you wanted to start selling them now without restriction — then I consent to that too, now that the first production isn't far off.

Thank you for your troubles about the dacha-estate. If it's possible to acquire it without certain sacrifices and difficulties, then I will rejoice. But if the terms of the loan are onerous — God be with her.

All the same, the money I received is too little. I'll borrow from Anatoly and then send it from Moscow.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

How glad I am to see Sasha with her husband.

I'll adapt "A Grateful Greeting".
