15 ноября 1890 г[од] Гостин[ица] «Россия» Милый друг! Как тебе, вероятно, Ант[он] Гр[игорьевич] сообщил, концерта здесь никакого не будет. Романс № 4 из op[us] 6-го «Слеза дрожит» я тебе прислал в том виде, в каком он имелся, т. е. в скрипичном ключе. Но он должен быть в басовом. Самаринскую пиэсу назови как хочешь. Не назвать ли её элегией? Это было бы самое подходящее; а наверху — посвящение памяти И. В. Самарина. Карточку для твоего племянника отдам Осипу Ивановичу. Я очень радуюсь, что Осип Иван[ович], по-видимому, без вреда для здоровья перенёс страшный удар. В моих беседах с ним я избегаю говорить о сыне, и он тоже не заговаривает. Дело с Ратером (Поллини) уже покончено при содействии Осипа Ивановича, т. е. Ратер получил от меня доверенность на заключение условия. Случайно видел «Chanson triste» для виолончеля. Это сущий позор!!! Уж не знаю кто: Дальгрен ли, которого ты считаешь хорошим корректором, или Хризандер виноват, — но только в полном смысле слова позор!!! Ради Бога, каждую мою вещь, в каком бы виде она ни издавалась, отдавай на просмотр Зилоти. Это теперь единственный якорь спасения. 15 Novembr 1890 Hotel Russia Dear friend! As Anton Grigoryevich] has probably told you, there won't be a concert here. I sent you romance No. 4 from Opus 6, "A Tear Trembles", in the form in which it was given, i.e. in the treble clef. But in has to be in the bass. Call the Samarin piece whatever you want. Couldn't it be called Elegy? That could be very appropriate; and at the top, the dedication in memory of I. V. Samarin. I'll give the card for your nephew to Osip Ivanovich. I'm very glad that Osip Ivanovich appears to have endured the terrible blow without detriment to his health. In my conversations with him I avoid talking about his son, and he also does not speak of him. The matter with Rahter (Pollini) has already been concluded with Osip Ivanovich's assistance, i.e. Rahter received a power of attorney from me to conclude terms. I happened to see the "Chanson triste" for cello. This a real disgrace!!! I don't know who is at fault: Dahlgren, whom you consider a fine proofreader, or Chrysander — but this is just a disgrace in the full sense of the word!!! For God's sake, give everything of mine, in whatever form it's published, to Ziloti to review. This is now its sole hope of redemption.
