Most respected baron!

No-one is permitted to attend any of the rehearsals [1]. The general rehearsal takes place on Wednesday, and as an author, your presence on the stage is unlikely to be forbidden [2]. I shall endeavour to obtain 2 seats at the 1st performance for your wife and daughter.

With sincere devotion and respect,

P. Tchaikovsky

Notes and References

  1. Tchaikovsky was referring to rehearsals of his new opera The Queen of Spades at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg.
  2. As the author of the libretto for operas and ballets previously produced at the theatre, Vietinghoff-Scheel was entitled to be present at dress rehearsals.
