25 февр[аля] 1891 г[ода] с[ело] Фроловское Дорогая моя Паничка! Ох, как вы далеко живете; иногда грустно, как сообразишь, какое нас расстояние разделяет. Но зато, несмотря на Толину неудачу и на временное его, а может быть, и твоей охлаждение к Тифлису, я продолжаю страстно его любить и самая сладкая мечта моя, — что осенью я опять поживу там с вами. А покамест я накануне дальнего путешествия; а именно; 1-го марта отправляюсь на день в Москву, 2-го выезжаю в Петербург, а 5-го или 6-го в Париж. Там мне предстоит прожить недели 2 или 3 по случаю большого концерта, которым я буду дирижировать. Сейчас после этого концерта сажусь в Гавре на пароход и еду в Америку. Оттуда вернусь к июню в деревню и буду с страшным усилием работать. После этой огромной работы (мне нужно написать к будущему сезону, одноактную оперу и балет) мне ужасно приятно будет отдохнуть с вами в Тифлисе. Теперь я очень упорно работаю, т. е. сочиняю черновые эскизы для балета. Был я на днях в Петербурге, куда ездил, во-1-x, чтобы видеть пиэсу Модеста, а во-2-х, чтобы иметь объяснения с Всеволожским, с коим чуть не поссорился. Нужно тебе сказать, что вследствие интриг Фигнера и Кондратьева, направленных, впрочем, не на меня, «Пиковую даму» после 12 полных сборов по увеличенным ценам сняли временна с репертуара. Это показалось мне и очень глупо и очень обидна, и вот, чтобы высказаться и облегчить душу, я написал Всеволожскому очень учтивое по тону, но в сущности резкое письма. Он было очень обиделся. Но потом письменно и устно мы объяснились и остались друзьями по-прежнему. Пиэса Модеста имеет огромные достоинства, на конец такой неприятный и тяжёлый, что успеха не было. Вероятно, Модест был бы страшно огорчён, — но ему на другой день предстояло ехать за границу, и это так радовало его, что своё фиаско он перенёс хорошо. Теперь уж он, вероятно, в Париже. Из интересных новостей могу только сообщить, что Алексей мой женился; свадьба была без меня, и случилось, что он венчался как раз в тот день, когда умерла его первая жена, так что утром была заупокойная обедня, а вечером свадьба. Жена его портниха, 18 лет, очень миленькая, во вкусе Лароша. Вот и все. Засим целую крепко Толю, тебя и Татоку, а также Кокодеса. Из Питера вышлю ему опять денег. 25 February 1891 Frolovskoye village My darling Panichka! Oh, you live so far away; I'm sometimes sad when I realise how much distance separates us. But then, despite Tolin's lack of success, and your temporary, perhaps, cooling towards Tiflis, I continue to love it passionately, and my sweetest dream is that I'll be living with you again in the autumn. In the meantime, I'm on the eve of a long journey: namely, on 1st March I'm setting off for a day in Moscow, on the 2nd I'm leaving for Petersburg, and on the 5th or 6th to Paris. I'll have to live there for 2 or 3 weeks on the occasion of a grand concert that I'm to conduct. Immediately after this concert, I'm boarding a ship in Le Havre and going to America. I'll return from there to the country by June, and be working terribly hard. After this enormous work (I need to write a one-act opera and ballet for the next season), I'll be awfully glad to relax with you in Tiflis. Now I'm working very strenuously, i.e. composing the rough sketches for the ballet. The other day I was in Petersburg, where I went, firstly, to see Modest's play, and secondly, to have an explanation from Vsevolozhsky, with whom I almost quarrelled. I need to tell you that as a result of intrigues by Figner and Kondratyev, which, however, were not directed at me, "The Queen of Spades", after 12 full houses at inflated prices, was temporarily removed from the repertoire. To me this seemed both very stupid and very insulting, and so, in order to speak out and to ease my soul, I wrote Vsevolozhsky a letter that was essentially harsh, but very polite in tone. He was most offended. But then we explained ourselves in writing and verbally, and remain on good terms as before. Modest's play has enormous merit, but the ending is so unpleasant and difficult that it had no success. Modest would probably have been terribly upset — but the next day he had to go abroad, and this cheered him up so much that he endured his fiasco well. He's now probably in Paris. As for interesting news, I can only report that my Aleksey has remarried; the wedding took place without me, and it so happened that the marriage took place on the anniversary of his first wife's death, so there was a funeral mass in the morning, and the wedding in the evening. His wife is a dressmaker, 18 years old, very pretty, to Laroche's taste. And that's all. Whereupon, I kiss Tolya, you and Tatoku hard, and Kokodes too. I'll send him money again from Piter.
