Париж 25/13 марта Глубокоуважаемый Иван Александрович!
В день моего отъезда из Петербурга я провёл часа полтора в беседе с М. И. Петипа по поводу «Casse-noisette». Кончивши со мной разговор о деле, он перешёл к подробному изображению своей теперешней деятельности в театре. Сколько я мог понять, разговор этот он повёл с тою целью, чтобы косвенным образом, т. е. через меня, довести до Вашего сведения, что он очень утомлён последним сезоном, что ему предстоит много дела в будущем и что вследствие того ему необходимо отдохнуть и освежиться поездкой за границу. Между тем средств на поездку нет, и, если не ошибаюсь, ему желательно получить экстраординарную субсидию, которой прямо просить у Вас он не решается. Он указывал на Чекетти, который, имея меньше дела, получает больше его и, будучи свободен весной и летом, может зарабатывать деньги помимо Императорского театра. В конце разговора я спросил его, не хочет ли он, чтобы я письменно довёл до Вашего сведения о том, что он сообщил мне. Он отвечал утвердительно, и вот я исполняю его желание. Петипа мне во всех отношениях ужасно симпатичен, и я с величайшей охотой ходатайствую за него перед Вами. Если это ходатайство неуместно и бестактно, простите ради Бога; но если есть возможность побаловать милейшего старичка, — то соблаговолите, дорогой Иван Александрович, устроить ему это дело. Дорогой сюда я немножко работал, но в Париже не нахожу ни минуты досуга. Надеюсь, что после концерта, коим я буду дирижировать 5-го апрr[еля] (нов[ого] ст[иля]), я, до отплытия в Америку, несколько дней посвящу работе где-нибудь вне Парижа. Paris 25/13 March Deeply respected Ivan Aleksandrovich!
On the day of my departure from Petersburg, I spent an hour and a half in conversation with M. I. Petipa regarding "Casse-noisette". Having finished talking to me about business, he moved on to a detailed description of his current theatrical activities. So far as I could understand, he conducted this conversation with the purpose of indirectly, i.e. through me, bringing to your attention that he was very tired from the last season, that he had many things do to in the future, and that consequently he needed to rest and refresh himself with a trip abroad. Meanwhile, he does not have the means for the journey, and if I am not mistaken, it would be desirable for him to receive an extraordinary subsidy, which he does not dare to directly ask you for. He referred to Cecchetti, who, having less to do, receives more, and, being free in the spring and summer, can earn money outside of the Imperial Theatre. At the end of the conversation, I asked him if he would like me to bring to your attention in writing what he had told me. He answered in the affirmative, and hence I am fulfilling his wish. I am awfully sympathetic towards Petipa in every respect, and it is with the utmost readiness that I am interceding with you on his behalf. If this petition is inappropriate and tactless, then for God's sake forgive me; but if there is an opportunity to indulge the dear old man, then please be so kind, dear Ivan Aleksandrovich, as to arrange this for him. On my way here I worked a little, but I have not a single moment to spare in Paris. I hope that after the concert, which I shall be conducting on 5th April (new style), before sailing to America), I shall be able to devote several days to work somewhere away from Paris.
