The Slavonic March will be played as the second number in today's rehearsal (which is the last one) [1]. I shall start with the overture [to Cherevichki] at one o'clock sharp, which means that the March will be played approximately at 1:20, because the overture isn't particularly long. The rehearsal will take place in the hall of the Assembly of the Nobility.

Sincerely devoted,

P. Tchaikovsky

Notes and References

  1. Rehearsal for the concert in Saint Petersburg on 1/13 December 1891 which had been organized by the tenor Nikolay Figner to raise funds for the victims of famine. At this concert Tchaikovsky would conduct the overture to his opera Cherevichki, the Slavonic March, and an ensemble from Verdi's opera Ernani. In his letter to Tchaikovsky of 26 November/8 December 1891, Balakirev had written that he very much wanted to hear an orchestral performance of the Slavonic March and asked Tchaikovsky to let him know when the last rehearsal would be held. See Balakirev's letter in
