Hambourg. Theater Director Pollini für P.T.

Thank you, my dear Kolya for consoling me with letters in my loneliness. Your last letter is full of interest, especially what you report about the terrible, villainous, satanic personality of a certain person who lives in your apartment. I shall come and investigate. Keep observing the further felonious activities of this newest Don Juan.

I find myself in Warsaw for a third day. Like many people, I don't find this a particularly attractive city. However, it is particularly good in summer. My rehearsals are going on; the orchestra here is more than second-rate, and I become far more tired than I do in the capitals. I'm spending the time with my former student, the famous violinist Barcewicz, as well as relatives of the singer Friede. This family is notable for the exceptional cordiality, hospitality and general sympathy of all its members. Today I'll celebrate the New Year with them. In the evenings, I go to the theatre. The opera here isn't at all bad. Yesterday I saw the notorious Cavalleria rusticana for the first time. This is indeed a very remarkable opera, particularly for its surprisingly successful choice of subject. Let Modya find me a story like this. By the way, on the subject of Modya and stories, tell him that I've learned who the author of the drama "King René's Daughter" is. He's Danish, and he's called Henrick Hertz. Shouldn't we write to him? Anyway, we'll discuss it when I return. Oh, how soon that blessed day will come!

Please, don't forget that my address is as follows: Hambourg. Theater Director Pollini für P.T.

I'm staying here in a first-class hotel, with the inconvenience that the service is astonishingly poor. You call and call endlessly before they come, and have to wait half an hour for the samovar to be brought. Congratulations on the New Year!

I hug you.
