Notes and References

  1. The date of this letter given in the auction catalogue's summary — "Klin 22. I. 1892" — is problematic, because on 22 January/3 February 1892 Tchaikovsky had not yet returned home from his recent travels. The auctioneers must clearly have misread a number in the date of this letter. We have dated it here provisionally to 28 January/9 February 1892, since that is the day on which Tchaikovsky arrived back at his home at Maydanovo, near Klin.
  2. The autograph was auctioned in 1977 by J. A. Stargardt, Marburg.
  3. J. A. Stargardt, Autographen aus allen Gebieten (Marburg, 1977), p. 235. Their German translation of the extract reads: "... Gerade eben bin ich von meiner Auslandsreise zurückgekehrt. Unseren Abmachungen entsprechend schicke ich Ihnen meinen Auslandspaß und den Ukas meiner Demission, mit der Bitte, sie weiterzuleiten ...".
