9 февр[аля] 1892 г[ода] с[ело] Майданово Очень я был обрадован, мой милый Толя, твоим письмецом из Самары. Прочёл его с живейшим интересом и сообщил для прочтения Модесту, который проездом находится здесь. Конечно, жаль было, что ты не заехал, — но, конечно, это было затруднительно. А я с большим удовольствием проживаю в Майданове и наслаждаюсь лучшим зимним месяцем в году. Обожаю я эти светлые с лёгким морозцем дни, когда солнце уже слегка припекает и чуется в нем что-то весеннее. Занятия пошли настолько хорошо, что сюита из балета уже готова и сегодня Модест отвезёт её в Петербург. Проживает у меня теперь Володя Направник, оказавшийся очень приятным сожителем. Он серьёзно готовится к экзамену и занят ещё большее число часов дня, чем я, а музыкальность его для меня большое удовольствие, ибо с ним по вечерам с наслаждением играю в 4 руки, а иногда просто заставляю его играть себе разные мною любимые вещи. Я нанял дом в Клину для будущего житья. Не знаю, помнишь ли, это дом Сахарова, большой, комфортабельный, по шоссе по направлению к Москве, уже за городом. Я решился всё-таки оставаться жить в глуши с тем, чтобы проживать месяца 3 в году в Петербурге, в меблированной квартире. Мне необходимо, я это чувствую, иметь жилье в деревне, или, что то же, в Клину, дабы знать, что стоит захотеть и покойный, тихий угол для работы у меня всегда готов. Кроме того, привычка к Клину играет тут большую роль. Из дома чудесный вид, и при нем сад весьма достаточный. Может быть, впоследствии я его и куплю. Дела мои финансовые, слава Богу, великолепны. В Москве дали 19 раз «Пиковую даму» с полным сбором, кроме других опер, в Петербурге тоже много придётся получить. Хочу попытаться начать копить. Я очень понимаю, что ты иногда будешь жестоко тосковать по своим, и я по опыту знаю, как мучительна эта тоска. Но будет и много, много интересного, а уж о святости и серьёзности дела и говорить нечего. Кроме того, ведь и не на 3 года ты уезжаешь, а всего на 3 месяца. Наконец, меня успокаивает симпатичность твоих attaches. Ты их полюбишь, и они тебе отчасти заменят близких. Модя ездил в Москву по приглашению Ермоловой по случаю её бенефиса; теперь возвращается домой. Я поеду на этой неделе в Москву с Володей, чтобы показать ему Москву на масленице. На 2-й неделе поста, в конце, еду в Петербург. Крепко обнимаю. П. Чайковский Пожалуйста, иногда хоть вкратце пиши. Модест рассказывал мне подробно про Татку в балете. Это прелесть!

9 February 1892 Maydanovo village Your note from Samara cheered me up very much, my dear Tolya. I read it with keen interest and told Modest, who was passing through here, to read it. Of course it's a pity that you didn't call in, but of course, this would have been difficult. And I'm living very pleasantly at Maydanovo and enjoying the best winter month of the year. I adore these bright days with a slight frost, when the sun is already slightly warm, and there's a hint of something more spring-like. My work has gone so well that the suite from the ballet is now ready, and Modest is bringing it to Petersburg today. Volodya Nápravník is living with me now, and he turns out to be a very pleasant lodger. He's preparing in earnest for his examinations, and works even more hours of the day than I do; his musicality is a great pleasure for me, because in the evenings I enjoy playing 4 hands with him, and sometimes I just make him play a variety of my favourite things for me. I've rented a house in Klin as my future residence. I don't know whether you'll remember it — it's the Sakharov house, large and comfortable, on the main road towards Moscow, just on the outskirts of town. Anyway, I've decided to stay living out in the wilderness, so that I can spend 3 months a year in a furnished apartment in Petersburg. I feel it's essential for me to have a house in the country, or Klin, which amounts to the same thing, in order to know that my desires can be met, and that there's always a quiet, peaceful corner for work ready for me. Furthermore, my familiarity with Klin plays a large role in this. The house has a wonderful view, and a more than sufficient garden. Perhaps I'll buy it eventually. My financial affairs, thank God, are excellent. "The Queen of Spades was given 19 times in Moscow to full houses, and besides my other operas, there's also be a lot still to come from Petersburg. I want to try to start saving up. I very much understand how you'll grievously miss those close to you sometimes, and I know from experience how painful this longing is. But there will be many, many interesting things, and it goes without saying that it is a serious and sacrosanct business. Besides, you're just going away for 3 months, not 3 years. Finally, I'm reassured by your sympathetic attaches. You will grow to love them, and they will partly replace your loved ones. Modya went to Moscow at Yermolova's invitation on the occasion of her benefit performance; he's now returning home. This week I'm taking Volodya to show him Moscow at Shrovetide.
