Tomorrow I'm sending you the first proofs of the last two numbers of "Iolanta". One plate, I think, will need to be redone. There's such a pile of nonsense that the devil himself would go mad. This is page 244. However, as you know, it just needs to be done nicely and carefully. I have not reviewed the German text. I did make an attempt, but could see that I was only making it worse. Please do this yourself!

I'm also sending you the vocal-piano reduction with alterations. If the newly printed copies will have German text, then it's essential that it is proofread, i.e. done thoroughly as in the full score, because the translator has sometimes cavalierly changed the notes, and I need to assess these changes and will correct many of them. However, to be fair to him, he has been surprisingly careful in avoiding changing the music, and it's only a few places where the recitatives are a mess.

Lord, how I'm exhausted from this work! But what can be done! I enclose a list of errors.

I embrace you.

P. Tchaikovsky

P.S. 6 August, morning.

I've just received your letter [1]. Please write to Schaffer (I think that's the name of the manager of Rahter's firm) that he must not print "Iolanta" without my corrections. It is essential that I see it. I would have written myself, but I can't find his address. Please write him a couple of words immediately. Tell him that I now have much to correct and alter.

P. T.

I hope that only the dung burned, not the attic itself [2].
