23 июня [18]93 г[ода] Гранкино Дорогой Павел Леонтьевич! Я приехал сюда ещё 5 дней тому назад, а письмо Ваше пришло на другой день после приезда, но ответить замедлил поневоле, ибо из этой глуши почта ходит только 2 раза в неделю. По поводу Зилоти я думаю, что можно ему ответить, что 700 р[ублей] заплатить ему не могут, что денег нет и что остальные дирижёры, т. е. Направник, я и т. д., принимают участие в Муз[ыкальном] общ[естве] из любви к делу, безвозмездно, а потому не найдёт ли он возможным отказаться от гонорара вовсе или же уменьшить его до минимума. Может быть, он на это пойдёт. Что касается программы, то так бы и написали, что Дирекция просит совершенно изменить её. Впрочем, как угодно Дирекции. Ментер и Сапельников приняли предложение (она — 1000 мар[ок], он — 500) очень охотно. Им удобнее приехать после Нового года, и, уполномоченный Дирекцией, я на это высказал согласие. Сапельников будет играть концерт Es-dur Листа. Ментер ещё не решила, что. Вот что, милый Павел Леонтьевич: виделся я в Лондоне с приятелем моим Louis Dièmer, парижским пианистом. Он очень просил меня устроить, чтобы его нынче пригласили бы в Петерб[ург] и Москву. Пианист он в своём роде неподражаемый и особенный успех имеет, когда играет на нарочно сфабрикованном clavecin старые вещи Rameau, Couperin и т. д. Я отвечал уклончиво, т. е. сказал, что уже все приглашения на будущий год сделаны. Но, может быть, ещё найдётся ему место? Человек он богатый и за большим гонораром не погонится. На всякий случай сообщаю его адрес: Rue d'Amsterdam, 84, Paris. Что Вы об этом думаете? Впрочем, я отнюдь не желаю пожертвовать ради него Брандукова. Во-1-х, Бр[андуков] отличный виолончелист, во-2-х, русский. Дай Бог, чтоб ангажемент Есиповой состоялся. Относительно своих программ я ещё не все обдумал. Когда нужно их представить? Решено ли, что в одном из моих 4-х концертов пойдёт «Рай и Пери» Шумана? Через неделю я отсюда уеду к старшему брату, а около 15[-го] числа буду в Клину, куда и прошу написать мне. Обнимаю Вас, многоуважаемый друг! Ваш, П. Чайковский Примусь за инструментовку симфонии, когда буду у себя дома, и надеюсь в конце августа прислать её.

I arrived here five days ago, and your letter came the day after my arrival, but my reply has been involuntarily delayed because the post only goes twice a week from this wilderness. With regard to Ziloti, I think that you can reply to him he cannot be paid 700 rubles, because there is no money, and that the other conductors, e.g. Nápravník, myself, etc., are taking part in the Musical Society as a labour of love, gratis, and therefore whether he might find it possible to refuse any fee at all, or to restrict it to a minimum. Maybe he will go for this. With regard to the programme, then if the Directors decided to thoroughly alter it, they would write. Anyway, whatever the Directorate wishes. Menter and Sapelnikov have accepted the offer (she — 1000 marks, him — 500) very gladly. It's more convenient for them to come after the New Year, and with the authorization of the Directorate, I've agreed to this. Sapelnikov will be playing Liszt's E-flat concerto. Menter hasn't yet decided what to play. Here's the thing, dear Pavel Leontyevich: in London I saw my friend Louis Diémer, the Parisian pianist. He was very keen for me to arrange for him to be invited presently to Petersburg and Moscow. As a pianist he is inimitable, and he has particular success when playing older items by Rameau, Couperin, etc. on a specially-made clavecin. I replied evasively, i.e. saying that all the invitations for the coming year have already been made. But perhaps a place can still be found for him? However, I don't want to sacrifice Brandukov just for his sake. Firstly, Brandukov is a splendid cellist, and secondly, he is Russian. God grant that Yesipova's engagement will happen. Regarding my programmes, I haven't yet worked out everything. When do they have to be presented? Was it settled that Schumann's "Paradies und Peri"" will be in one of them? In a week I'll leave from here to go to my older brother's, and around the 15th I'll be at Klin, where I ask you to write to me. I embrace you, most respected friend! Yours, P.
