Dear friend!

It's already my fifth day here; from the Tirol with its mountains, rocks, rapids, gorges etc., I arrived at the bare, endless steppe and found the steppe a thousand times more poetic, liberating and beautiful. And life in a well-designed Russian homestead is far more comfortable than staying in a rundown knight's castle.

I found the proofs. The first two were done meticulously and thoroughly. But I still found much that required correction. Couldn't the dedications be put in a larger print? My God, they are hardly noticeable; and yet for the most part they are terribly appreciated and are the cause of much pride and joy. Please, see to it if you can!! Do the pages with corrections need reviewing once more? Can we be sure everything will be corrected without more proofs?

I learned about Karlusha's death from the newspapers on my way here. Although I had no hope at all that he would recover, all the same it was very sad and I shed many tears. It was so nice of you to assist Anna Leontyevna so promptly. I will let you decide if the entire sum you issued to her should be put on my account or whether you will take on part of it yourself. I have a feeling that you are inclined to do the latter. As you wish. I've forgotten again where my account stands with you. Please send me 100 silver rubles here, but since I'll probably be leaving before they arrive, I'll collect them from Konradi's office, if you'll kindly address it under the name of the manager there, Nikolay Fyodorovich Shoff. Besides, Modest (who writes that he is very much in need) will probably turn to you asking for money, with my permission, so you may give him my credit of 200 roubles. Sorry that I'm forever pestering you with my financial dealings.

I'm staying here for another week or so. Then I'll be leaving for brother Nikolay's for a while, and I'll see you in Moscow. I plan to stay put at home in Klin for the end of summer and the whole of the autumn. I hug you!
