19 July

Dear friend!

I received your little note on my way home, around half an hour before leaving for Klin. There were many reasons why I absolutely cannot delay my departure. Why are you here? I was unutterably astonished by your little note, for I imagined you to be at Selishche [2]. You are probably very busy orchestrating the opera [3]. I'm also going home to sit down to work. I need to orchestrate: 1) the symphony and 2) the piano concerto [4]. Couldn't you come over on, say, Saturday evening, so that neither of us shall have to tear ourselves away from work? Write me a couple of words anyway, explaining why and how you're still here. Honestly, I should have been terribly glad to have seen you, but I'm unable to stay today.

Until we meet,

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky
