19 июля 1893 г[ода] г[ород] Клин Голубчик Саша! Вчера вечером вернулся наконец домой. Нашёл здесь письмо твоё и в то же время письмо от Петерссена, взаимно друг друга объясняющие. Всего страннее в этом деле то, что Иогансен тебе не отвечал. Не объясняется ли это тем, что Дирекция разъезжалась и что старик не знал, как поступить без совещания с ними? Во всяком случае Петерссен, как он мне пишет, оттого именно и решился ответить от себя, что ему казалось, как он объясняет, неделикатным оставлять тебя так долго без всякого ответа. Дело в том, что Петербургская Дирекция в денежном отношении дошла до почти полного краха, и такого гонорара, как ты спросил, они заплатить не могут. А также что-то в твоей программе Иогансену и другим бывшим ещё в Петербурге директорам не совсем понравилось. Но без меня, Направника и гр. Бобринского (теперь это у них главный заправила) они ни на что не могли решиться. Иогансен вышел из затруднения тем, что вовсе тебе не отвечал, а Петерссен написал тебе, быть может, и в несимпатичном тоне, но, судя: по его уверениям, ни малейшего желания быть неприятным не имел. Вся эта путаница может распутаться в конце августа или начале сентября, когда я буду в Петербурге совещаться с Дирекцией по поводу концертов. Как поступать относительно касающегося тебя дела? Конечно, я могу устроить, что твоё самолюбие будет вполне удовлетворено и что они извинятся в своих вольных или не вольных прегрешениях. Но вот насчёт гонорара я не знаю, как действовать. Заплатить требуемую тобой сумму они не могут. Можешь ли ты сбавить? Мне бы ужасно хотелось, чтобы ты побывал в Петербурге! Вообще научи меня, как действовать! Спасибо, голубчик, за карточки. Завтра я принимаюсь за инструментовку симфонии. Концерт тоже вчерне готов. С нетерпением буду ожидать твоих переделок в моем 2[-м] концерте. Целую Верину ручку. Тебя крепко обнимаю. Твой, П. 19 July 1893 Town of Klin Golubchik Sasha! Yesterday evening I finally returned home. I found your letter here, and also one from Peterssen, and together the two letters explain each other. The most peculiar thing in this whole business is that Johanssen hasn't been replying to you. It might be explained by the fact that the Directors had gone and the old man didn't know how to deal with things without consulting them. In any case, Peterssen, from what he writes to me, decided to answer directly to you because, as he explains, it seemed to him somewhat rude to leave you for so long without any answer. The thing is that Petersburg's Directorate has almost completely collapsed financially, and they can't pay the fee you asked for. And it may also be that Johannsen and other directors who were in Petersburg didn't like something in your programme. But without me, Nápravník and Mr Bobrinsky (who is now mainly in charge of them now) nothing can be agreed. Johannsen sidestepped this difficulty by not answering you at all, and Peterssen wrote to you instead, albeit in an unsympathetic tone, but judging by his reassurances, he didn't have the slightest wish to be unpleasant. This whole muddle can be sorted out at the end of August or the beginning of September, when I'll be in Petersburg to discuss my concerts with the Directorate. What's to be done about the matter concerning you? Of course, I can arrange that your pride will be reasonably satisfied and that they apologise for their intended and unintended transgressions. But I don't know what to do about the fee. They can't pay the amount you asked for. Could you reduce it? I should like awfully for you to visit Petersburg! So, in general, tell me what to do!
