Town of Klin, Moscow province

Dear friend!

I'm hurrying to reply to you with the outgoing post just now, and therefore forgive me for writing only a few words. The other day I received a letter from Modest in Kamenka; in this letter he writes about you and your work, from which I conclude that he has probably already received my letter and telegram. From the Optina Hermitage, on the way to Kamenka, he called on brother Nikolay and was detained there — meanwhile, he had instructed his correspondence to be sent to Kamenka. This, I believe, is why you remained without an answer for so long. In any case I am terribly upset that you have wasted so much precious time.

As for myself, I will tell you that I have only just returned to Klin after almost two months of peregrinations. After London I stayed for one week with Menter in the Tirol; two more in Poltava province at Konradi's, then 10 days with brother Nikolay in Kursk province. Now I have set to work on scoring the symphony. I am very glad that I can finally sit quietly at home and devote the majority of my time to working, as idleness was becoming a burden on me.

Keep well, golubchik! Warm regards to Olga Eduardovna, your daughters, and Kostya. Volodya has not written to me. I will write to him anyway.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky

Forgive me for not writing clearly — I am in a rush.
