- ↑ Following his marriage, Tchaikovsky was no longer able to employ two servants, and so in Letter 588, dated 20 July/1 August 1877, he informed the elder brother, Mikhail Sofronov, that his services would be no longer required. The present letter appears to have been written while Tchaikovsky had returned to Moscow (between 11/23 September and 24 September/6 October 1877) in an attempt to seek alternative employment for Mikhail Sofronov with his friend and colleague Karl Albrecht. The latter had mistakenly dated this letter to 1876.
