Венеция 27/15 дек[абря] Кончил скерцо. Очень устал. Целый день был туман такой, что в двух шагах нельзя было ничего различить. Ложусь сейчас спать. Теперь 10 часов. Завтра нужно встать в 6. Все уже уложено, и счёт заплочен. О, как я рад, что не буду больше есть ту мерзость, которой здесь кормят. Мы последние обитатели отеля. Завтра у них никого не останется. Милан 28/16 Выехали в 8 часов. Приехали в 4. Остановились в Hôtel d'Europe. Погуляли, пообедали. Теперь иду в театр и завтра опишу свои впечатления. Чувствую себя отлично. Милан 29/17 утром Очень хорошо выспался: про вчерашний театр скажу, что он доставил мне больше злобы, чем удовольствия. Давали оперу «Ruy-Blas» Маркетти. Эта опера давно уж разошлась по всей Италии. Я ожидал найти в ней что-нибудь интересное. Оказалось самое пошлое, банальное, плоское подражание Верди. Исполнение было такое, что если б у нас, в Москве шла опера таким образом, то весь театр начал бы шикать. Пение — самое непозволительное. Т. е., главные певцы и певицы все ужасно старались, но голоса ужасные. Костюмы, декорации, хоры, оркестр, все это очень плоховато. А между тем, это второй театр после La Scala. В этом последнем вчера ничего не было. Сегодня идёт «Африканка», и мне очень хочется остаться, — да Алёша говорит, что денег много тратим. Увы! он прав. После оперы шёл балет очень забавный (с арлекинами, исчезновениями, превращениями, как у нас в балаганах) и Алёша хохотал навесь театр. Я сам очень много смеялся. Да! я забыл сказать, как держала себя публика во время оперы. Приходила в восторг. Громадный театр был битком набит. Если я решусь остаться, то напишу тебе об этом на этом же листке; если уеду в Геную, то допишу его сегодня ночью. Мы приедем туда в11¾ часов вечера. Теперь пойдём в собор и полезем вверх. 2 часа дня Был ли ты на вышке Миланского собора в 1872 г[оду]? Я был сегодня в первый раз. Погода была благоприятна, но не совсем, — швейцарских гор не было видно. Зато тирольские красовались во всем своём блеске. Вообще Миланский собор одна из величайших красот, мной виденных. И тот, кто не взбирался, кто не видел всех подробностей, тот не знает, до чего этот собор грандиозно прекрасен. Прогулка эта очень мне понравилась. После того пошли в галерею и там завтракали. До чего, после венецианской мерзости и гнили, все казалось мне вкусно! Теперь я дома. Опять пойдём гулять, а в 6.40 едем в Геную, где я намерен ночевать. Сейчас буду телеграфировать Модесту о своём адресе в San-Remo. Я решился остановиться в Hôtel Victoria, но ты всё-таки адресуй покамест poste restante. Твой, П. Чайковский

Venice 27/15 December The Scherzo is finished. I'm very tired. The fog was so thick all day that you couldn't see anything two steps away. I'm about to go to bed. It's 10 o'clock now. I have to be up at 6 tomorrow. Everything is already packed, and the bill is paid. Oh, how glad I am that I'll no longer have to eat the filth that they feed us here. We are the hotel's last inhabitants. Tomorrow they will have no one left. Milan 28/16 We left at 8 o'clock and arrived at 4. We're stopping at the Hôtel d'Europe. We went for a stroll and had dinner. I'm going to the theatre now and will describe my impressions tomorrow. I feel splendid in myself. Milan 29/17 morning I slept very well: as for yesterday's theatre, I'll say that it left me more angry than pleased. They gave Marketti's opera "Ruy-Blas". This opera has long been popular throughout Italy. I expected to find something of interest. It turned out to be the most vulgar, banal and flat imitation of Verdi. The performance was such that if we had performed the opera in this manner in Moscow, the whole theatre would have started hissing. The singing was most unacceptable, i.e. the principal male and female singers were all trying terribly hard, but their voices are awful. The costumes, décor, chorus, orchestra were all very poor. And yet this is the second theatre after La Scala. There was nothing on in the latter yesterday. Today they're giving "L'Africaine", and I'm very keen to stay — but Alyosha says that we're wasting too much money. Alas, he is right! After the opera there was a most amusing ballet (with harlequins, disappearances, transformations, like we have in the farces) and Alyosha was laughing loudest of all in the theatre. I myself found it very funny. Indeed! I forgot to say how the audience behaved during the opera. They were delighted. The enormous theatre was packed full. If I decide to stay, then I'll write to you about it on this same sheet of paper. If I go to Genoa, then I'll finish writing tonight. We'll be arriving there at 11.45 in the evening. We're now going to the cathedral and climbing to the top. 2 o'clock in the afternoon Did you go up the tower of Milan Cathedral in 1872? I was there for the first time today. The weather was favourable, but not entirely so — the Swiss mountains were not visible. But the Tyrolean ones were in all their glory. Generally Milan Cathedral is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. And anyone who hasn't climbed up it, who hasn't seen every detail, doesn't know how grandiosely beautiful this cathedral is. I enjoyed this walk a great deal. Afterwards we went to the gallery and had lunch there. After the filth and rot in Venice, everything seemed so delicious to me! Now I'm at home. We'll be going for a walk again, and at 6.40 we're off to Genoa, where I intend to spend the night. I'll telegraph my address to Modest in San Remo now. I've decided to stay at the Hôtel Victoria, but you should still address me poste restante for the time being. Yours, P. Tchaikovsky
