Ваше Превосходительство!
Третьего дня я имел честь доложить Вам что приеду в ближайшем будущем в Париж, а сегодня должен предварить Вас, что вследствие возобновившихся совершенно неожиданно припадков очень серьёзной нервной болезни, я не могу покинуть Сан-Ремо. Из консультации врача, к которой мне пришлось прибегнуть и из собственных моих наблюдении над собой я прихожу к тому заключению, что не смотря на самое горячее моё желание, я не могу с пользою для своего искуства и для моей страны взять на себя обязанности делегата. Тому препятствует состояние моего здоровья. Я сегодня написал об этом г. Бутовскому и просил его принять меры к назначению на моё место другого делегата. К сему считаю долгом присовокупить, что покинувши Россию три месяца назад и проведя всё это время в безусловном одиночестве, я не мог-бы отвечать ни на один из вопросов, изложенных в том questionnaire который г. Бутовский прислал мне. Вообще я нахожу, что без инструкции русский делегат не может обойтись. Не зная на какие средства он может рассчитывать, не будучи снабжён какой-либо программой действий, он будет поставлен в совершенную невозможность давать ответы Коммиссии. В полной уверенности, что Ваше Превосходительство примите какие-нибудь меры, чтобы отсутствие русского делегата на предстоящих заседаниях Коммиссии, не повлекло бы каких-либо неблагоприятных последствий для судеб русского искуства на Парижской Выставке, я имею честь покорнейше просить Вас принять уверение в искреннем уважении Вашего покорнейшего слуги, П. Your Excellency!
Three days ago I had the honour to inform you that I would be coming to Paris in the near future, but today I must forewarn you that as a consequence of renewed and completely unexpected attacks of a very serious nervous illness, I am unable to leave San Remo. Following a consultation with a doctor, to whom I was obliged to resort, and from my own self-observations, I have come to the conclusion that, despite my most fervent wishes, I cannot fulfil my duties as a delegate for the benefit of my art and of my country. The present condition of my health prevents it. I have written today to Mr Butovsky and asked him to take measures to appoint another delegate in my place. To this I consider it my duty to add that, having left Russian three months ago and having spent all this time in unconditional solitude, I could not answer any of the questions included in the questionnaire which Mr Butovsky sent me. In general, I consider that the Russian delegate cannot act without instructions. Without knowing what resources he can rely on, and not having been provided with any sort of programme of action, it will be completely impossible for him to give answers to the Commission. I have full confidence that Your Excellency will take the necessary measures so that the absence of a Russian delegate at the forthcoming meetings of the Commission would not precipitate any adverse consequences for the fate of Russian art at the Paris Exhibition, and have the honour to humbly request you to accept this assurance of sincere respect from your humble servant, P. - ↑ When this letter was auctioned in June 2003 by Kotte Autographs, Stuttgart, it was acquired by Elisabeth Bender of the Tschaikowsky-Gesellschaft who enabled it to be published for the first time the following year. The autograph has subsequently been acquired by the Tchaikovsky House-Museum in Klin [1]
