Dear friend. I have received Antonina Ivanovna's consent to a divorce. My joy is unconfined.

Until the matter is concluded, it has proved necessary to deposit funds with a person whom this lady considers a trustworthy party. I suggested your name to her, and she has accepted. Therefore I shall shortly be sending 10 thousand rubles in your name. If my wife should come to you, then do not refuse her any explanations or counsel on the matter. If only you knew how phenomenally dense she is! The terms of the divorce are as follows:

1) 10 thousand [roubles] to be paid on the day the divorce is signed.

2) the legal costs shall be borne on my account.

3) all the fault shall be mine.

4) She has demanded, besides the 10 thousand I am giving her, 2500 rubles which she will use as security on her forest from a term starting in August. I explained to her that this debt will need to be paid out of the 10 thousand, and that I shall give her credit, which is to be gradually repaid.

But now I have only one thought. For proceedings to commence when I leave for Moscow, and to be precipitated at the beginning of June. I shall need to engage a lawyer for the divorce case, and will require your assistance in setting the wheels in motion.

And so, wait for me. Until we meet.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

Notes and References

  1. This is unlikely to have been an accidental 'slip of the pen', as Tchaikovsky presumably did not want his publisher to know that he was staying as a guest of Nadezhda von Meck at her Brailov estate.
