Суббота утром Друг мой, пришлите мне, пожалуйста, черновую рукопись «Онегина», — мне хочется привести её в порядок. Я все забываю ответить Вам насчёт фруктов. Мне подают их очень аккуратно и в большом изобилии. Вообще кормление превосходное, и если есть недостаток, так это излишнее количество кушаний. Вчера вечером я много занимался музыкой, т. е. просмотрел обе сюиты Риса и концерт Lalo. Последний мне вовсе не нравится и не идёт в сравнение с Symphonie espagnole. Сюиты же очень милы; написаны без претензий, но мило, изящно, хотя, как у всех современных немцев, — мало свежести. Кстати о свежести в музыке. Рекомендую Вам оркестровую сюиту покойного Bizet «L'Arlésienne». Я слышал её в Петербурге. Это в своём роде chef-d'oeuvre. Если не ошибаюсь, она издана в 4 руки. Имеете ли Вы понятие о «Roi de Lahore» Massenet? Дождь лил весь вечер, и я уже не наслаждался ночной свежестью на балконе, как накануне. До свиданья, милый друг мой. Ваш, П. Saturday morning My friend, please, send me the rough manuscript of "Onegin" — I want to put it in order. I keep forgetting to answer you regarding the fruits. They serve them to me very punctually and in great abundance. In general I am excellently fed, and if there is any shortcoming, it is the excessive number of dishes. Last night I had lots of music to occupy me, i.e. I looked through both of Ries's suites and Lalo's concerto. I do like the latter at all, and it does not bear comparison with the Symphonie espagnole. The suites are very lovely though; written without pretension, but sweet and elegant, although like all modern Germans, there is little freshness. Speaking of freshness in music, may I recommend to you the orchestral suite "L'Arlésienne" by the late Bizet. I heard it in Petersburg. It is a masterpiece of sorts. If I am not mistaken, it has been published for 4 hands. Have you come across Massenet's "Roi de Lahore"> It has been raining all evening, and I no longer enjoyed the freshness of the night on the balcony as I did last night. Until we meet, my dear friend.
