18 October Please, golubchik, put the following on the symphony's title page:
I hope it's not too late! Something strange is happening with this symphony! It's not that it displeased, but it has caused some bewilderment [1]. So far as I myself am concerned, I'm more proud of it than any of my other works, but we'll talk about this soon because I'll be in Moscow on Saturday [2]. I embrace you. P. Tchaikovsky For God's sake, as soon as possible send to the conservatory in Petersburg the parts for the finale of Konyus's suite!!! If not printed, then at least in manuscript [3]. |
Notes and References
- ↑ This letter was written two days after the premiere of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 at the first symphony concert of the Russian Musical Society in Saint Petersburg, conducted by the composer.
- ↑ Tchaikovsky's illness prevented him from travelling from Saint Petersburg to Moscow.
- ↑ Georgy Konyus's suite From Childhood (Из детской жизни), Op. 1, for chorus and orchestra, was due to be performed in the Russian Musical Society's concert for 27 November/9 December 1893 in Saint Petersburg, under Tchaikovsky's direction. The concert went ahead after Tchaikovsky's death, with Sergey Taneyev taking his place on the rostrum.
