Petersburg 8 November 1889 Dear friend Aleksandr Konstantinovich
I write to you utterly unwell. I must have caught a cold on Sunday at the circus [1], and since then (even with you on Sunday I was feeling out of sorts) I've been ill the whole time. With a heroic effort I was at rehearsals of the jubilee concert this morning, where I conducted abominably, and then later at rehearsals for the ballet [2]. There I saw E. Albrecht and told him that if I was well I would come to your celebration this evening. But, returning home, I feel so awful that I must deny myself the pleasure of your quartet evening. Please forgive me, and be in no doubt that I am very sorry that my ill health has prevented me once again from hearing and seeing you. I also regret that I won't be at Palkin's [3] in the evening, where I'd summoned all our mutual friends together, including N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov and dear Lyadov. Tomorrow evening I'm going to Moscow in any case. I will be very glad if you have the opportunity to catch me at the station. But this is just pia desideria [4] I embrace you. P. T. |
