11 September

I will be leaving here on Tuesday, 18 September, and as a result of the misanthropy that has seized me, and other circumstances, I shall stay no more than one day in Moscow, i.e. leaving on the 20th. Therefore I should like to spend a whole day with friends on the 19th. Couldn't you invite me to dinner, because I very much want to see Sofya Ivanovna? I should like Rubinstein, Albrecht, Kashkin, Hubert, Taneyev and, perhaps, Zverev to be at this dinner. I will be staying with Nikolay Grigoryevich, and ask you to seek his permission. I've received the 2nd act of Messer's concoction. There's something missing from it. I should like to have everything else in my hands on the 19th, i.e. the start of the 1st act, which I haven't had in my hands, and the passages missing from the 2nd. Kindly tell my servant Aleksey to come to meet me on the Wednesday morning courier train. I'll be writing to him about this specifically anyway.

Until we meet.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

Except for the aforementioned friends, kindly tell no-one about my arrival.
