Петербург 27 м[арта] Пётр Иванович! Я буду в Москве в будущую пятницу, — ровно через неделю. Душа моя! Устрой мне, ради Бога, одно денежное дело. Теперь не подлежит сомнению (почти), что опера пойдёт. Между тем мне страшно, неимоверно нужны деньги в размере 1000 рублей серебр[ом]. Не думай, что хочу занимать у тебя. Мне хотелось бы занять в Музык[альном] обществе 1000 р[ублей], которые были бы обеспечены поспектакльной платой за оперу. Если же этого недостаточно, — то вот что. Ведь мне ежегодно выдают 300 р[ублей]. Я бы отказался в течение 4-х лет (надеюсь ещё 4 года прожить) от этого вознаграждения, если бы мне выдали теперь 1000. Даю тебе честное слово, что я не для себя нуждаюсь в столь крупном займе. Мне пришлось сильно поплатиться за некоторых близких людей (это между нами). Поговори, пожалуйста, об этом с директорами Муз[ыкального] общ[ества], и с Н[иколаем] Гр[игорьевичем] в особенности. Если же это безумно, то нечего делать. Только вчера я получил корректуру «Евгения Онегина». У меня лежат клавираусцуг «Девы» и партитура её же. Направник просил мне все это тщательно просмотреть. Кроме того, я целый день обязан кого-то посещать у кого-то непременно быть, — ну, словом, об корректуре «Онегина» мне здесь решительно и думать нечего. Надеюсь сделать это в Москве. Я страшно, невыразимо устал. Так называемый мой концерт испортил мне много крови. Впрочем был довольно удачен. Не знаю, хватило ли на стипендию. Твой, П. Чайковский

Petersburg 27 March Pyotr Ivanovich! I'll be in Moscow next Friday — in exactly one week. My dear chap! For God's sake sort out one financial matter for me. Now there is (almost) no reason to doubt that the opera will be going ahead. Meanwhile I'm terribly, unbelievably in need of money, to the sum of 1000 silver rubles. I don't think I want to borrow it from you. I should like to borrow 1000 rubles from the Musical Society, which would be secured on the opera's performance fee. If this is insufficient, then they give me 300 rubles a year anyway, so I would decline this reward for 4 years (I hope to live for another 4 years) if I were given 1000 now. I give you my word of honour that I don't need such a large loan for myself. I had to pay mightily for some people close to me (this is between us). Please, discuss this with the directors of the Musical Society, and with Nikolay Grigoryevich in particular. If this is madness, then what's to be done. Only yesterday I received the proofs of "[Yevgeny Onegin]]". I have the piano reduction of "The Maid" and her full score beside me. Nápravník has asked me to carefully review all of this. Furthermore, I am obliged to spend the whole day visiting someone or other without fail — well, in short, I have absolutely no time to think about the proofs of "Onegin" here. I hope to do this in Moscow. I am terribly, inexpressibly weary. My so-called concert of has caused a lot of ill feeling. Anyway, it was quite successful.
