Каменка 27 окт[ября] Милый друг! Посылаю тебе письмо Бесселя, вполне обрисовывающее эту богомерзкую личность. Можно подумать, читая его, что я кругом им облагодетельствован и что это честнейший человек в мире. Отвечать ему не буду. Пётр Иванович! Тебя ожидает неприятный сюрприз. Я нечаянно написал серенаду для струнного оркестра в 4-х частях и высылаю её тебе послезавтра в виде партитуры и 4-ручного переложения. Вижу отсюда, как ты вскакиваешь и восклицаешь: благодарю — не ожидал! Оттого ли, что это моё последнее детище, оттого ли, что и в самом деле оно недурно, но только серенаду эту я люблю ужасно, и смертельно хочется как можно скорей выпустить её в свет. Это очень удобная форма, голосов всего нужно 5. Я даже мечтал поехать в Лейпциг, заказать как можно скорее гравировки, чтобы ещё в нынешнем сезоне, к концу, она могла быть готова, а доски отдать потом тебе. Мне так бы хотелось, чтобы она могла быть сыграна в этом сезоне, и особенно в концерте фонда, где оркестр удвоен? Ну, впрочем, об этом поговорим при скором свидании. Я, однако ж, остаюсь здесь приблизительно до 8-го ноября и лишь 10 или 11-го буду в Москве. Не успеешь ли прислать мне сюда ещё одну корректуру? Напр[имер], партитура каприччио не готова ли? Kamenka 27 October Dear friend! I'm sending you a letter from Bessel, which fully illustrates his godforsaken personality. Reading it, one could think that I'm blessed to be part of his circle, and that this is the most honest man in the world. I won't be answering him. Pyotr Ivanovich! You have an unpleasant surprise in store. I've accidentally written a Serenade for String Orchestra in 4 movements, and I'm sending it to you the day after tomorrow in the form of a score and 4-handed arrangement. I can see from here how you'll be leaping up and exclaiming: thank you, I wasn't expecting this! Whether because this is my latest offspring, or because it actually isn't too bad, I just love this serenade terribly, and I'm dying for it to see the light of day as soon as possible. This is a very convenient form, as only 5 voices are required. I even dreamed about going to Leipzig and commissioning it to be engraved as soon as possible, so that it could even be ready by the end of the present season, and then give the plates to you. If it could be played this season, and especially at the charity concert, where the orchestra is doubled, I should want that very much. Well, anyway, we'll discuss this soon when we meet. However, I'll be remaining here until around 8th November, and I'll only be in Moscow on the 10th or 11th. Would you have time to send me more proofs here?
