Tolya, golubchik! I see from your letter, arriving today, that out of the two alternatives — for me to Moscow for the wedding, or to wait for you in Naples — it has to be the former. It's impossible for me to wait here until the end of April for one reason alone: I literally don't have enough money. So, I choose to travel to Moscow for the wedding. In any case, I'll arrive before the Annunciation. Although I know from Sasha's letter that she'll also be at the wedding, this still won't prevent me from being there. The plan to wait in Italy is very tempting, but prudence requires that we abandon it. At the beginning of April I'll need to settle down in Kamenka, or generally somewhere where life costs nothing, in order to start saving. It's absolutely incredible how much money I've spent this winter! Well, Anatosha, the question is settled. I shall be at your wedding. I'll either stay with you or Jurgenson — I'll let you decide.

I've had no luck in Naples! The weather has been bad the whole time: it's either raining, or there's a horrible wind blowing the dust around, causing me to despair. I've been unfortunate with the accommodation as well. The proprietor of the Villa Postiglione treated me like a defenceless traveller who'd fallen in to the clutches of a bandit, i.e. he robbed me in the most cruel manner. In one week we paid 1000 francs for my upkeep alone, i.e. an apartment and board. To top it all off, he was quite rude towards me. Now our premises are fairly large, and although it's much noisier and less peaceful here, at least we're in the city, and not in a den of thieves.

What a fool your friend Flerov is! Today Pyotr Ivanovich sent me a clipping from the "Moscow Register". In his column, Flerov describes how he saw me win a jar of pickles with his own eyes. Firstly, this never happened, and secondly: who would be interested? God knows. I kiss you, golubchik Anatosha, and Parasha too!

Yours
