Tiflis

The last time I was in Moscow I didn't find you in when I called at your house, and so I am forced to discuss our project with you in writing [1]. I am now finishing off the music for those scenes which I had, and there will soon come the point when it would be very, very agreeable for me to have the second half of the 3rd act to hand. Therefore, although this may seem brazenly importunate on my part, still I venture to urge you to send me as quickly as possible the most important scene of the opera [2]. I shall write it little by little during my journey and the stopovers, and I hope that, as long as I remain in good health in all this time, I shall return to Maydanovo in mid-July with the 3rd act fully completed. I shall stay here until the 26th. This letter will reach you within 5 days, and so, consequently, if you send me the manuscript around the 18th I will receive it before my departure. And after that, golubchik, I shall start badgering you about the 4th act, which I would like to have in my hands no later than 15 June so that I can devote the whole summer to finishing off the opera. Forgive me, and, if possible, have the kindness to fulfil my request.

My journey was extraordinarily pleasant. The stopover in Taganrog, crossing the Caucasus via the Georgian Military Road, my stay in Tiflis (a very picturesquely situated and interesting city) — all this afforded me a whole series of agreeable impressions. The trees here are already almost all completely covered with verdure, the fruit trees are finishing blossoming, spring is in full swing. Around the 26th (depending on when the steamship departs, but not much later than this under any circumstances) I shall leave for Constantinople, Naples, Rome, Vichy, and Paris [3]. I wish you, most kind Ippolit Vasilyevich, every possible prosperity and ask you not to forget about me. Give my respectful compliments to all your family.

Your sincerely devoted and affectionate,

P. Tchaikovsky

Notes and References

  1. Before departing for Tiflis to visit his brother Anatoly, Tchaikovsky had stayed briefly in Moscow from 21 March/2 April to 23 March/4 April 1886. On 22 March/3 April he recorded in his diary: "Fuss over the passport [...] At the Albrechts', the Shpazhinskys', Taneyev's, Katerina Vasilyevna Peresleni's.
  2. The "most important scene" of The Enchantress was in Tchaikovsky's view the encounter between Nastasya and the Prince's son in the second half of Act III. Shpazhinsky complied with this request and sent the text for this scene to Tchaikovsky together with a letter dated 9/21 April 1886. Shpazhinsky's letter has been published in
  3. Tchaikovsky eventually decided not to visit Italy because of the cholera epidemic which was raging in Naples, and from Constantinople he sailed to Marseilles, arriving at the French port on 11/23 May. Four days later he boarded a train to Paris — note based on information provided by Vasily Kiselev in
