Некто Тушмалов, окончивший курс нынче весной в Петербургской консерватории, узнал от Направника, что будто бы у Вас в Москве требуется для тебя помощник и что хотя жалованья такому второму дирижёру не полагается, но место это можно получить, если от всякого вознаграждения отказаться. Не знаю, правда ли это? Тушмалов просит меня рекомендовать тебе его, и я это могу сделать с величайшей охотой, ибо под его дирижёрством шла прошлой зимой в Москве моя опера «Опричник», и я был в совершенном восторге от оркестрового исполнения. У Тушмалова есть средства к жизни, и если в самом деле такое место получить ему можно, то ты бы увидел впоследствии, что рекомендация моя заслуженна. Каковы дела по части ангажемента Скомпской и Фёрстер? Обнимаю тебя. П. Чайковский |
Dear friend Ippolit Karlovich!
A certain Tushmalov [1], who graduated this spring from a course at the Petersburg conservatory, has learned from Nápravník that you may be requiring an assistant in Moscow and that although the salary of a second conductor cannot be guaranteed, he might still be appointed if he declines any sort of remuneration. I do not know whether this is true? Tushmalov asked me to recommend him to you [2], and I can do so extremely readily, because my opera "The Oprichnik" was given under his direction last winter in Moscow [3], and I was completely delighted with the orchestra's performance. Tushmalov is possessed of a livelihood, and if he were in fact to be appointed to such a position, then you will subsequently see that my recommendation is well deserved [4]. - ↑ Mikhail Makarovich Tushmalov (1866-1896) was a conductor and violin instructor, who had graduated from the Leopold Auer's violin classes at the Saint Petersburg conservatory in 1885, and then from Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov's music theory classes in 1889.

- ↑ Tchaikovsky was mistaken: Tushmalov conducted The Oprichnik at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory on 18/30 December 1888, in the composer's presence.
