Dear friend!

I am in need of and will be in further need of money. I don't want to take it from the theatre yet. In total I estimate that now, and then in Moscow and Petersburg, where I'm travelling from Moscow for 2 weeks, I'll require a budget of around 1000 [rubles]. I'm asking you to send me 300 for the present. I'll take a little more in Moscow. I'd like to manage without the performance fees in Moscow and Petersburg until the New Year, at which point I'll be in receipt of a fairly respectable windfall.

You know that on 6th November I'll be in Moscow to conduct "The Voyevoda". The parts being written out in Petersburg need to be ready by then. Kindly ensure that they're sent on as soon as they're copied. Perhaps before rehearsals I'll have the opportunity to review them for any glaring errors. The new "Celesta" instrument will also need to be ordered from Osip Ivanovich.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

Wolff has made me a proposal for 20 concerts in America, and is asking for my terms. I've demanded 12,000 dollars. I don't think he'll go for it.

So much the better!
