Thank you, dear friend Sergey Aleksandrovich, for your letter and the portrait [1], which for me captures your fine personal appearance extremely vividly! You ask what my new opera is called? "Iolanta". On my last visit to Petersburg, along with Vsevolozhsky and Nápravník I assigned the roles, and you were selected for the second performance (Yakovlev is first [2] of the part of Robert. You should be sent this, but if for any reason you do not receive it before then end of your service [3], then you can obtain the opera from Jurgenson's using the note on the second half of the sheet [4]. I think that even without Sonki [5] you might spend the summer usefully. Most importantly, believe more in yourself, be more confident, try to conquer your timidity and excessive modesty. This is essential for you to succeed on the stage — Sonki and his lessons notwithstanding. Farewell, golubchik.

In 2 weeks' time I shall be going abroad.

With sincere affection,

P. Tchaikovsky
