Mon cher ami!

My dear friend!

I just came home after an absence of one month and found your kind letter. How kind and nice of you to think about me!! Thank you, my dear friend, for these tokens of your friendship that I appreciate very much, be sure of that.

If the director Mr Levi [1] thinks that the translation of "Iolanta" is faulty, then I am quite willing for him to have it redone, but this does amaze me a bit, for he had assured me (I am not good at German) that the translation was good. Anyway, of course I have no objection against a new translation and I give him my full and complete approval in advance.

What could one possibly have against the libretto of "The Queen of Spades"? I assure you, my dear friend, that it is a very interesting and moving subject.

In any case, I am very touched by the high opinion that Mr Levi has of my works, and I am infinitely grateful to him for this.

My dear friend. You wrote your two adresses in an illegible way, and I am afraid lest this letter should get lost. The first is Hotel "Nuisol". The second is Wuinz or Wniur Bank-Verein. I suppose that this is Wiener Bank-Verein. It is to this latter address that I am sending my letter.

I embrace you.

P. Tchaikovsky

I have written a new symphony [2], of which I am very proud!
