3rd January 1890 Saint Petersburg Most respected Aleksey Sergeyevich!
I read your letter [2] only late at night, after my return home. Is it much too late to answer you? I do not know whether you wanted to put a page from my ballet in today's "New Time"? If so, then I am extremely sorry not to have replied in time. Nevertheless I hasten to say to you that I am very grateful for the honour which you wished to render me. In the event that it is not too late, I am sending you a "page" from the ballet herewith. As you can see, the ballet has already been published in a piano arrangement, and the rights to use anything from it are contingent on my published P. Jurgenson; but I am entirely certain that he would have no objection to including extracts in "New Time" — on the contrary, he will be very happy about this. In any event, I assume responsibility for this violation of his rights. I am sending you herewith the piano reduction with an indication of the pages which I find most appropriate for inclusion in "New Time". I consider the most appropriate of all to be the extracts found on pages 192-193 [3]. Wishing you and your wife every prosperity for the New Year, I remain your devoted, P. Tchaikovsky |
